Renovated Allen Theatre at PlayhouseSquare

The original lobby of architect C. Howard Crane’s Allen Theatre. Peggy Turbett photo, Cleveland Plain Dealer.

THS member Debbie  Humphreys  in New York City sends this post about a group of theatres, including the Allen, which we saw in 2000 during our Cleveland Conclave / Theatre tour. Perhaps its time to go back to Cleveland ?

“They ought to slap a nice big “Made in Cleveland” sign on the renovated Allen Theatre at PlayhouseSquare in downtown Cleveland. . .”

  1. From the description, I am not in joy about the Allen’s renovation away from a historic theater, certainly not in regard to the auditorium, and then there’s an alarming comment about the gorgeous looking lobby seen in the photo……..In general, though, Playhouse Square’s reuse of (other) movie palaces is fantastic.

  2. Here’s a link to many photos of how beautiful it HAD looked prior to conversion -
